A
POVERTY REDUCTION BY EMPOWERING WOMEN & LOCALLY EXCLUDED (PREWALE)

The World Environment Foundation in partnership with S M Charitable Trust has developed strong linkages with the Himachal government and civil society through PREWALE to create awareness of women 's rights and involve them in decision making and implementation of multitudes of poverty alleviation programmes. The programme involved the following activities:

Empowerment of women and socially excluded to fight for their rights through training and organisaiton.

Lobbying state government for expeditious devolution of power to Panchayat Raj Institutions at the village level and encouraging participation of marginalized women and socially excluded in this scheme.

Involve marginalized women and socially excluded in planning and implementation of proposals to eradicate poverty, endure equitable distribution and provide them sustainable livelihoods.

Develop innovative schemes for eradication of poverty and providing sustainable livelihoods through eco-tourism and sustainable management of forests and other natural resources.

Provide health information and counseling specially to marginalized women on reproductive health issues.


Secure women's reproductive health rights and reduce preventable deaths among marginalized women of Himachal Pradesh.


Develop support strategies for women on the margins for early detection of cervical breast cancer and HIV/AIDS.


Development of proposals and lobby concerned authority to improve and implement government legislation.

Campaign and lobby to build public support and international pressure for change.

Training of healthcare providers, community women and civil society organisations.

Establishment of PREWALE centres in each of the 12 districts of Himachal Pradesh.

Campaigns to raise public awareness and generate support for PREWALE


Proposals and lobbying to devise legislation to improve the ground reality and rights of the poor and marginalized.

Networking women and socially excluded.

Advocacy to influence the policies of the state government.

Training/support of promoters in human rights, women reproductive rights and gender issues.
